There are a number of good reasons to eat more seasonal fresh food but, most importantly, this is when fruit & vegetables are at their freshest. Spring often means lamb, fish and chicken are on the menu, and at this time year there's plenty of inspiration for delicious accompaniments: freshly boiled new potatoes, leafy salads, freshly picked Yorkshire Asparagus, spring greens, new season carrots & broccoli , watercress and even grapefruit which are actually available all year around, though they tend to be juicer and sweeter during the spring months.
New Potatoes- In season from April to July and a sweeter potato that simply sing springtime! They have thin skins, a crisp waxy texture and are smaller than their main crop counterparts. In stock now at Carrick's we have the exclusive Jersey Royals & Cornish New, and this week we welcome the arrival of the wonderful Lincoln Bard New Potato - they are a sure signal of spring & summer here in UK.
Watercress - Although often overshadowed by rocket, don't underestimate watercress. It is an incredibly versatile ingredient that can be added to soups, salads, sauces and sandwiches. It is available year round, but is at its most flavourful from April to September. Watercress is a strong-tasting salad leaf with a peppery flavour, it is also a natural superfood bursting with iron, calcium, vitamin A, C & E.
Asparagus - Growing British Asparagus is a labour of love! Our Premium Asparagus is hand picked in Yorkshire, each spear is harvested by hand when it reaches just the right height. It is packed full of goodness, so your not just getting a delicious vegetable but a healthy one too:
- eating asparagus is a great prebiotic which promotes healthy bacteria in the large intestine and can help reduce bloating. The combination of fibre and antioxidants also appears to provide anti-inflammatory benefits. A win win choice to pop into your basket.
